Section 296-96-23285. What is the minimum number of suspension ropes allowed?

- All elevators, except freight elevators that do not carry passengers or freight handlers and have no means of operation in the car, must conform to the following requirements:(1) The minimum number of hoisting ropes used is three for traction elevators and two for drum-type elevators. Where a car counterweight is used, the number of counterweight ropes used must not be less than two.(2) The minimum diameter of hoisting and counterweight ropes is 3/8 inch. Outer wires of the ropes must be no less than 0.024 inch in diameter. The term "diameter" where used in this section refers to the nominal diameter as given by the rope manufacturer.
