- (1) Strangles (also known as equine distemper) is a contagious, upper respiratory tract infection of equines caused by a bacterium, Streptococcus equi var equi. Strangles is enzootic in domesticated horses worldwide.(2) Horses that test positive to Streptococcus equi will be dealt with by the state veterinarian on a case-by-case basis.
